About the project

Welcome to the YEN Homestay! Here are our efforts to make an impact on our vietnamese community:

The Community Library Space: We want to create a space where people can read in peace and exchange books. Everyone can contribute their old books or swap them with the new ones available on Yen’s bookshelves. They can enjoy it on spot or bring the book home. Our goal here is to share our love for books and their priceless knowledge with everyone. With that in mind, all the books at Yen are carefully selected and focus mainly on these following subjects: Healthy Nutrition, Buddhism, Life, Philosophy, Classical Literature and children books.
The Workshop Space: We organize painting workshops on the two last Sundays of each month. Mai, one of our wonderful housekeepers, is a truly one of kind artist. She claimes that her first painting teachers are life and mother Nature and has her own way of perceiving and teaching arts, which is vastly different from the traditional teaching ways in art schools. Through the workshops, Mai shares her exceptional perception of arts with her pupils, opens the new way to understanding the man-made beauty. Her teaching aims to help people to open their horizon, become more confident and creative with their art perception as well as to express themselves through arts. Beside painting, we also organize crafts workshops dedicated to traditional handicrafts as well as recycling. Our modern life relies so heavily on technology that sometimes, hand-crafts art seems to be something belonging to the past. We want to bring it back, create the space where people can learn to create valuable things by their own hands. We want our participants to reconnect with the nature and objects around them. Especially these workshops are open for everyone, we don’t have age-limits but will divide them into age-appropriated groups to deliver the content to our best.
The Village Cleaning: Our homestay resides in the small village near Hoi An called Triem Tay. It’s a small peaceful village, which has practiced bamboo-mat weaving for more than 2 centuries. But our village is suffering heavily under the alarming speed of modernization of Hoi An, with the increasing amount of plastic trash coming every day. We want to change that. To counter this particular bad effect, we form a group of trash-pickers with the villagers and spend at least one day a week cleaning the village together. We also organize workshops and documentation film nights to spread environmental awareness. With these activities we want to set an example of living responsibly and environmental-friendly.
Clothes Swapping: Our society nowadays mainly focuses on FAST consumption. We buy things fast to our liking and realize shortly afterwards of their abundance in our spaces. They become trash. This applies especially on fashion, where clothes are discarded once they’re no longer “trendy”. Because of that, we create a space in Yen where people can exchange or donate their valued but no longer used clothing for something they will use. Free of charge. The only rule is that these pieces must be cleaned and wearable.

About the homestay

We have 6 rooms. Our homestay resides in the community touristic village Triem Tay, 1km away from the old quarters. You can easily reach the bamboo-mat weaving villages, rice paper making village, carpenter village Kim Bong, and ceramic village Thanh Ha.
For meals: We provide home-cooked meals with the “common kitchen” concept: People can pay for their next guest’s meal and get their meals paid by the previous guests. Price: 3$/ meal/ person
