Our mission is to halt and push back the colonization frontier of various industries in our area and restore our ecosystems
The Kalamos and Kastos sustainable development project is a private conservation project run by the non-governmental non-profit organization Terra Sylvestris. It is based on Kalamos Island.
The goal of the project is to create the conditions and implement sustainable development through the rewilding of the islands and the adjacent area of the marine protected area.
Means to achieve this goal include scientific studies, biodiversity monitoring programs and direct actions in the following thematic areas: halting the loss of biodiversity in Kalamos and Kastos islands and their satellite islands and their surrounding waters, protection and restoration of habitats and species on sea and land, empowerment of local societies, legal actions for better protection of the environment, increasing awareness about the unique environment of the region and finally creation and implementation of a sustainable model of daily living for inhabitants of the islands via experimentation.
The expected end result of the project is the creation and implementation of a sustainable development model in the area that respects the rights and wishes of local communities that are focused around the conservation of biological diversity and sustainable living that will stimulate the growth of the local economy and improve the standard of living while protecting and restoring biological diversity.
For this purpose, a biological field station and eco-community operate on Kalamos island by Terra Sylvestris where participants to the project from all over the world stay and work on the project.
The Kalamos island biological field station is a traditional stone house that has been recently renovated. It consists of sleeping facilities, kitchen facilities, sitting
areas, field lab and bathroom and washing machine facilities. The current capacity of the station is up to 14 guests at any single point in time in bunkbed (mixed dorm) accommodation. Either individuals or groups can get a bed(s) in the facility. There are many accessible, crystal clear beaches nearby (15 mins walk the closest). Also bars, restaurants, cafes, grocery stores. The rich fauna and flora of the area are not to be missed as are the traditional settlements and the byzantine castle tucked in the greenness of the forest next to the sea. Lefkada a popular tourist destination is also fairly close(about 2 hours by public boat or bus).
The surrounding forests that the station is at the edge of being one of the important areas for the birds of Greece. The inner Ionian marine protected area starts at the crystal clear beaches that are 15 minutes from the station by walking. The unique byzantine castle is about an hour walk and the traditional settlements of the villages are interesting in their own right. The nearby island of Lefkada(2 hours by bus or public boats) offers more mainstream touristic options such as boat trips.
