Ecuador – Turismo Comunitario Salasaka

Visit Turismo Comunitario Salasaka to strengthen the Salasaka's indigenous culture and care for the environment.

Breakfast included.
Getting to know the NGO, Touristic Tours.
Single, double and shared room.

About the project

The Turismo Comunitario Salasaka project is settled in the valley of the Comunidad de Huasalata, Salasaka’s Indigenous Town, 2 hours and 30 minutes south from the Ecuadorian capital city and 45 minutes before you get to Baños de Agua Santa. The project was started in 2014 by twelve dedicated families and it was founded one year later. Our main goal is to preserve Salasaka’s indigenous identity and take care of the environment, language, traditional clothing and crafts, ancestral food, architecture, historic celebrations, traditional medicine, holy sites and sustainable agriculture. Since we started we have gotten support from and worked together with Huasalata Community Government, Pueblo Salasaka’s Junta Parroquial (government), Municipio del Cantón Pelileo (county’s government), Universidad San Francisco de Quito, PhD. Elizabeth Currie, tour operators and other institutions and individuals. The families who are part of our project earn a fair salary and between 5% to 10% of our earnings are destined to social activities, for example rubbish container construction, fixing the access to the holy sites, new hut construction (ancestral architecture rescue), construction of a viewpoint, English teaching, gastronomy teaching, dental care brigade projects, participation in environment care conferences, participation on alternative medicine research and other activities.

About the homestay

We have a guest house and a hostel. The guest house construction is a beautiful mix of modern and traditional architecture, it has a comfy bedroom for 5 people, a kitchen with a warm fireplace, a beautiful place to sit to enjoy meals, two big bathrooms with hot water, a gorgeous yard and a garden. The hostel is constructed based on the traditional architecture. Its capacity is 25 people, with 11 rooms, private and shared bathrooms with hot water and it offers restaurant service. These two lodging services are qualified as tourist class hostels. You will have a comfortable and fun stay. Huasalata, Salasaka and the lodging establishments are surrounded by waterfalls and the most magic mountains and volcanoes! You can enjoy Baños de Agua Santa which offers amazing waterfalls and thermal waters and observe the Tungurahua, an active volcano since 1999. Along you can hike to the Cotopaxi volcano or to the Chimborazo mountain which is the highest Ecuadorian mountain. It is also possible to visit the Amazon region and marvel at the natural jungle paradise.

How to get there:

If you are coming from the north (Quito, Cotopaxi) or from the South Guayaquil or Chimborazo, or from the Amazonian region you need to take a taxi or public bus to the Comunidad Huasalata which is settled at north of Salasaka’s town, near/before to La Parroquia El Rosario. It is 7 minutes by car or bus, or 45 minutes walking. The guest house and the hostel and the project work place are settled in Comunidad Huasalata’s principle avenue entrance, next to the Asequia Albornos bridge. The reference is casa de eugenio espejo, “el cieguito”.

Other things to do nearby:

In the community Huasalata or in Salasaka you can be part of the sustainable agriculture program with one of the project families; you can have traditional medicine ritual experience with the local Yachak; you can join to traditional clothing making process; you can do pics with endemic leaves and flower petals and take them as souvenirs; you are going to learn, watch, and dance at the traditional celebration (Inti Raymi); and you will taste succulent local food prepared with the fresh vegetables from the gardens. Also, you can have trail activities, walk to visit principle holy sites and hike to the near mountains.
