Seventeen years ago, Carlos, my Argentinean husband, an intrepid traveler who loved taking me off the beaten path, drove us on a route he discovered that links Quito with the village of Nono and the valley of Tandayapa. It is now known as the Eco-route of the Hummingbird. I fell in love with the amazing green scenery, the wildflowers and the terraces cultivated with corn and potatoes. This ecosystem is called the cloud forest. Now imagine a place where the clouds bathe the mountains and hummingbirds play with the flowers! This is what Nono is about! In this paradise we end up buying the last ravine of the town, a place full of garbage and a tiny house whose walls were waiting for our arrival. We transformed this mess into a sanctuary garden where squirrels and hummingbirds can play free. Walking with the local people I learned not only about nature but about them, I saw a town with no working opportunities, unless you settle for cow-milking your whole life. We decided it was our call to turn this non-existed location into a tourist destination. Opening our house into a lovely bed and breakfast: VILLA DORIS, and working with the community projects as fundamental part of our business, we achieve to have a unique destination where you will feel welcomed, and have the opportunity to learn the living history of Ecuador: its exuberant vegetation, its wonderful people, its delicious cuisine, our culture and traditions. Villa Doris empowers women from our community through an embroidery project where we aim that they weave a better future for themselves and their families. We also sponsor a women project in the Alambi community (near Nono) which aims to reforest and convert a piece of land into a garden full of native plant species to attract hummingbirds of high altitude.
